What is BioCell Collagen® Plus and what is it used for?

Aging produces many physiological changes that affect the outward appearance of the body but also health; these changes involve, at least in part, the structural integrity of the connective tissue of joints, skin, tendons, ligaments, bones, and blood vessels.

Connective tissue, as the name implies, has the function of holding organs fixed in their positions and binding them together and is composed mainly of an extracellular matrix (ECM) of collagen fibers, glucosaminoglycans (GAGs) and proteoglycans. Aging gradually weakens connective tissue due to

• the degeneration of native collagen production and the GAG network
• of damage caused by UV exposure
• of other risk factors such as smoking or chronic exposure to environmental pollutants.

Modern technologies and various studies on the subject have led to the development of various raw materials aimed at supporting the structures of our body most prone to wear and tear, and the TN Pharma Research & Development Team decided to use hydrolyzed collagen combined with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C for the formulation of its BioCell Collagen® Plus, which I am proud to present to you.

It is a supplement, completely gluten-free, that can be useful in supporting the physiological function of skin, bone, and cartilage. Let's see together what it is composed of:

BIOCELLCOLLAGEN®

BioCell Collagen® is a clinically studied ingredient composed of natural hydrolyzed collagen type II peptides, chondroitin sulfate, and hyaluronic acid. The synergy of the biomolecules that make up the unique matrix of BioCell Collagen® plays a significant role in its efficacy and uniqueness as no other collagen ingredient or blend can compare. Various studies, including seven human clinical studies, demonstrate its safety, efficacy, and bioavailability.

BioCell Collagen® is composed of pure chicken sternal cartilage free of hormones and antibiotics; it mirrors the composition of human cartilage, rich in type II collagen, chondroitin sulfate, and hyaluronic acid. It is a source free of blood vessels, lymphatics and nerves, structures known to carry disease and impurities.

The manufacturing technology is also patented and subjects chicken sternal cartilage to various processes, including filtration, purification, concentration, hydrolysis process and sterilization, to ensure consistent quality and safety. On joint health BioCell Collagen® takes a comprehensive approach i.e., it not only addresses the well-being of cartilage, but also tendons, ligaments, and synovial fluid. For about two decades the standard for joint health has been the use of glucosamine and chondroitin with moderate success. In fact, BioCell Collagen® provides the building blocks of macromolecular collagen, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate, which are also necessary for healthy synovial fluid and tendon and ligament connective tissue.

Studies were conducted on a pool of 89 volunteers who were given either this ingredient or a placebo, and the results showed improvement in mobility and thus quality of life. We can therefore say that BioCell Collagen® at the joint level:

On skin health, on the other hand, research establishes that supplementation with BioCell Collagen® stimulates fibroblasts, which are the skin's producer cells, for the maintenance of skin's structural integrity and beauty. The most credited mechanism of action here would be a concentration-dependent inhibition of hyaluronidase, an enzyme involved in the degradation of hyaluronic acid thus contributing to signs of aging and loss of skin elasticity.

In one of the most extensive studies conducted on skin health, it was found that taking 1000 mg of BioCell Collagen® visibly reduced common signs of skin aging within 12 weeks of daily use.

Results reported in this clinical study include measurable improvement represented by increased skin elasticity, reduction in crow's feet, and improvement in depth and number of fine expression lines and wrinkles. Finally, a study was also conducted on the action of this ingredient against photoaging. The study found that its intake, with subsequent controlled UVB exposure, reduced signs of photoaging, also significantly decreasing, wrinkles and transepidermal water loss, increasing skin elasticity and hyaluronic acid content.

CURCUSHINE™MICROCAPSULES

It is a newly developed ingredient, a source of bioavailable, microencapsulated curcumin.

Curcumin is the most active ingredient within turmeric with numerous anti-aging effects. It is commonly known that the aging process is due to a permanent accumulation of molecular damage generated by ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species); in addition, the accumulation of ROS leads to the activation of proteolytic enzymes such as hyaluronidase, collagenase, and elastase, which, by cutting the respective proteins, inactivate them, worsening skin damage. Protein glycation also contributes to skin aging as it deteriorates existing collagen by cross-linking.

The antioxidant properties of curcumin have shown the ability to reduce ROS in cells by different mechanisms of action; in addition, curcumin has shown good abilities to delay skin aging. However, all these qualities of curcumin are largely obscured due to its poor bioavailability. This is why we chose to use Curcushine™ Microcapsules in our product: the innovative delivery system transforms curcumin into a bioavailable product due to the all-natural encapsulating matrix, which incorporates and protects curcumin.

Through both in vivo and in vitro tests, this particular ingredient has been shown to significantly reduce ROS and glycation levels in human skin cells, thus preventing skin aging from within. Specifically, to evaluate the antioxidant power, an in vitro test was conducted in which oxidative stress was induced in skin fibroblasts. These fibroblasts were then placed in contact with Curcushine™ Microcapsules and a green tea extract (whose antioxidant properties are well known). At the end of the test, the inhibition of ROS accumulation was measured for both, and from this the antioxidant power was evaluated, which was very high for curcumin.

A similar test was also carried out to evaluate the action on the glycation of proteins or lipids in the skin generated by UVA with the result that this seems to have a detoxifying and protective effect for the skin against harmful solar rays, thus generating a powerful anti-aging and skin repairing effect.

Further positive finding is that the matrix in which curcumin is microencapsulated greatly increases bioavailability and slows release making Curcushine™ Microcapsules active for as long as 8 hours.

VITAMIN C

The scientific name is L-ascorbic acid, and it is one of those substances with a variety of fundamental functions within our bodies. Of all of them, the most important is probably the synthesis of collagen in the process of which it serves as a cofactor; one of the steps in collagen biosynthesis is the conversion of proline and lysine (two amino acids) to hydroxy-proline and hydroxy-lysine.

This process is mediated by two enzymes (proline hydroxylase and lysine hydroxylase) that use ferrous ^Fe2+ ions for the reaction. The job of vitamin C is to keep the iron in a reduced form, a form without which this reaction would not occur at all.

Thus the supply of collagen occurs exogenously with BioCell Collagen® Plus but the same supplement also stimulates its endogenous production by providing vitamin C.
